There is a crisis in social care for disabled people and care providers are turning to artificial intelligence as a solution that has made headlines in recent years. Artificial intelligence (AI) has played a key role in many aspects of our lives, from healthcare to education, but there are a number of reasons why it will continue to play a role. We see the impact that AI will have in fostering innovation, empowering everyone – and that is particularly true for people with disabilities.
In particular, AI has shown the potential to improve people’s lives and well-being by breaking down or removing technological barriers that people with disabilities face. By improving skills and levelling the playing field, it helps support technologies reach parts of the world where more people with disabilities live and fewer support services and resources are available to meet them. Many tribes are working to improve health outcomes through data collection and AI support for people without disabilities.
Supporting technologies and accessibility applications that use machine learning and other techniques to monitor user behavior and adapt their functionality can offer benefits to people with disabilities. The increasing use of artificial intelligence-based systems brings both risks and opportunities for people with no cognitive disabilities, and there are three AI projects that will help.
